Coal Mining
Risk Assessments (CMRA)
Coal Mining Risk Assessments (CMRA), are requested by the Coal Authority during the planning phase, particularly for sites that are situated within what has been defined by the Coal Authority as being a ‘Development High Risk’ area.

This CMRA is compiled taking into account the history of the site and surrounding area and the underlying geology. Additionally, a Coal Authority Mining Report is also obtained which identifies the presence of a wide range of potential coal mining-related risks to the site. These include historical mine shafts, past opencast mine areas, and whether there are any known or possibly worked coal seams nearby. Following an assessment of all of this available information, suitable recommendations are made either suggesting further assessments or intrusive investigations to further assess any potential mining risks or confirming that the site is not deemed to be at risk of unrecorded mine workings.
